Grandpa & Grandma Newton and me! |
I live in a very small house in the 300+ year old rural town of Colchester, CT. I live here with my husband Steve, son Ryan, Bailey Amber the Cocker Spaniel, 7 assorted cats and 8 Angora rabbits. I learned to knit when I was about 11 years old from Grandpa Newton on two whittled sticks from the backyard and some crabbin' twine. I was staying with my Grandparents at the beach for a few weeks in the summer during the Stone Age era before television. He wanted to give something to do to keep me out of his hair. My sister-in-law Joan taught me to crochet when I was 13 years old. On whim or during a crazed moment, I purchased a drop spindle while on vacation several years ago in PA. The fiber shop where I purchased it was not attuned to spinners. They sold me a bag of roving which I have now learned is only suitable for rug making. Very unpleasant stuff. But I persevered and carried that darn spindle and roving with me though out the remainder of our vacation. I eventually found the Madley Spinners here in Colchester. In this group I learned how to spin on a CD spindle and I was hooked. A month later I drove 3 hours to New Hampshire to purchase a Lendrum spinning wheel and I haven't looked back since. I purchased a table top 4 harness loom at Rhinebeck a couple of years ago. I'm still trying to comprehend the weaving process. I am in awe of some of the woven items I have seen. I still have all of my fingers in spite of my battles with my drum carder. I want to experiment with dye and the dye process other than Kool Aid. Eventually I hope to develop our own hand painted yarns. We are currently running our fiber operation out of our home. Steve is the Webmaster of the site. My son Ryan designed our logo. This is truly a family operation. We some day want to open a retail shop up in the center of town. I will be forever learning about fiber and fiber related items. Thanks for visiting with us!
